Maria DE LUCA

Maria (Rosa) De Luca is Full Professor of Musicology and Music History (SSD PEMM-01/C) in the Department of Humanities at the University of Catania, where she teaches History of Music (BA in Literature, L10), History of Musical Cultures (BA in Communication Sciences and Languages, L20), Media History of Musical Genres, and Languages and Methods of Music Education (MA in Communication of Culture and Entertainment, LM65R).

Her research interests focus on the history and historiography of music from a social perspective, the works of Vincenzo Bellini, historical soundscape studies, and the didactic transposition of historical-musical knowledge. In these areas, she has coordinated four University-funded research projects: Music and Baroque Rituality in the Urban Context of Eighteenth-Century Sicily (PRA 2006); Music in Catania in the 18th Century between Collections and Cultural Consumption (PRA 2007); The Didactic Transposition of Historical-Musical Knowledge: Fundamental Concepts and Cognitive Processes (PRA 2008 and 2011).

She served as Scientific Coordinator for the University of Catania in the project The Virtual Music Museum – BellinInRete (Development and Cohesion Fund of the Italian Presidency of the Council of Ministers / ERDF European Regional Development Fund 2014–2020 / Pact for Catania), and as Local Unit Coordinator for the University of Catania in the PRIN 2017–2020 project The Formation of Musical Audiences in Italy from the Twentieth Century to the Present and in the PRIN 2022 project Instrumental Music in Italy: Contexts, Practices, Imaginaries.

Since 2012, she has been a member of the IMS (International Musicological Society) Study Group Transmission of Musical Knowledge: Constructing a European Perspective, and since 2016 of the IMS–ICTM Study Group Mediterranean Music Studies.

From 2007 to 2010, she was a member of the doctoral board in History of Culture and Territory in the Early Modern Period at the University of Catania; from 2010 to 2013, of the doctoral board in Humanities and Cultural Heritage; from 2014 to 2016, of the doctoral board in Cultural Heritage Studies; and since 2017, she has been a member of the doctoral board in Heritage Science and Cultural Production, where she also serves as Deputy Coordinator.

From 2006 to 2009, she directed the Laboratory for the Cataloguing of Musical Heritage at the Faculty of Letters and Philosophy (BA in Cultural Heritage Studies, Syracuse campus). She coordinated the Special Qualifying Pathways (PAS) at the University of Catania for the A032 (Music) teaching class. She has collaborated with the Master’s program in History and Analysis of Territory and continues to collaborate with the Scuola Superiore of the University of Catania.

She is currently President of the MA program LM65 Communication of Culture and Entertainment (2026–2030). She served as a member of the Department Council representing researchers (2012–2014) and of the University Disciplinary Board (2011–2015).

She is a member of the editorial board of the journal Musica Docta (Class A) and co-editor of the Bollettino di studi belliniani (Class A). Since 2011, she has been Director of the Fondazione Bellini (2015–2019 / 2020–2024 / 2025–2029) and a member of both the Board of Directors and the Scientific Committee of the Centro Studi Belliniani (CSB), which she directed from 2008 to 2011.

From 2008 to 2013, she served as representative of researchers on the Executive Board of the Associazione Docenti Universitari di Musicologia (ADUIM). She is currently a member of the Directorium (2022–2027) of the International Musicological Society (IMS) as Italy’s representative.

She served as Delegate of the Rector of the University of Catania for Relations with the Territory and Cultural Institutions (2019–2025) and is currently Coordinator of the Third Mission for the Department of Humanities.
