Andrea Manganaro is Full Professor of Italian Literature, at the University of Catania, Department of Humanities. He is:
- National President of the Associazione degli Italianisti-Sezione Didattica (ADI-SD) and member of the executive board of the Associazione degli Italianisti (ADI).
- Vice- president of the Scientific council of the Fondazione Verga;
- Delegate of the Rector of the University of Catania to the Giovanni Verga Centenary Committee (Sicily Region) and member of the National Committee for the Centenary celebrations of the death of Giovanni Verga (Ministry of Culture).
He was for five years (2016-2021) a member of the Academic Senate of the University of Catania.
He is co-editor of the «Annali della Fondazione Verga» (ranked as class A journal by ANVUR- (Italian National Agency for the evalutation of Universities and research institute). He is part of the editorial boards: of the following class A journals: «Le forme e la storia»; «Studi italiani» (Firenze); «Italica» (Journal of AATI, American Association of Teachers of Italian); of the following journals: «Italianistica Debreceniensis» (University of Debrecen, HU); «Revista Internacional de Culturas y Literaturas» (RICL) (University of Sevilla)
In 2018-19 he was "Goggio Visiting Professor" at the University of Toronto (Canada), where he taught History of criticism and Italian literary historiography at the Department of Italian Studies, as part of the "graduate" institutional courses. In University of Catania, Department of Humanities, he teaches Italian literature in the degree course in Literature, History of Italian literary criticism and Didactics of literature in Master Degree in Modern Philology.
- His publications and research interests cover the entire chronological span of Italian literature with a focus on the relationship between literary forms and history, fiction, poetics, the history of criticism, as well as intellectual history. In particular, he works on the Italian short story (Boccaccio, sixteenth century), Foscolo, Verga, history of criticism: sixteenth century poetics, the early nineteenth century and the twentieth century (especially De Sanctis, Croce); didactics of literature.
His philological interests mainly concern the work of Benedetto Croce and Giovanni Verga. He edited Storie e leggende napoletane (National Edition of Benedetto Croce's works) and he is editing Storia di una capinera (National Edition of Giovanni Verga’s works)
- He is author of 136 scientific publications (including 9 books and dozens of articles in journals rated as excellent). - He has participated to several national and international conferences both as a presenter and as an organizer. He is a member of the AATI (American Association of Teachers of Italian) and has attended AATI conferences both as an organizer of panels and participant. He had held numerous conferences and lectures invited by several Universities such as the University of Toronto, Department of Italian Studies (where he held two "Goggio lectures", on Verga and De Sanctis), and Toronto-Mississagua, Department of Language Studies (Ontario, Canada), Dickinson College (Pennsylvania, USA), University of Paris 8 (France), Turku (Finland), Murcia (Spain), Liege (Belgium), Düsseldorf (Germany), Athens (Greece), Debrecen (Hungary), Szombathely-Nyugat Magyarorszagy Egyetem (Hungary), Warszawa (Poland).
- In 1985 he obtained a Laurea degree in Italian Literature at the University of Catania with a dissertation on the Italian literature of the 16th Century. From 1987 to 1990, he was in charge of the project of the Ministry of Culture to preserve the historical notary records kept in the State Archive in Catania. In 1996, he was awarded a PhD in Literature Science and Linguistic during the VII cycle of MIUR (Italian Ministry of Research and Education) with a PhD dissertation on Benedetto Croce. He conducted his research at the University of Catania and defended his Ph.D. dissertation in front of a national committee at the University of Pavia in 1996.
