
Orazio LICANDRO
I have been a full professor since 2006 and currently teach History of Political Institutions in the Greek and Roman Worlds; Papyrology and History of the Ancient Document; History of the City and Citizenship in the Greek and Roman Worlds; and Roman History at the Department of Humanities (DiSUm); I also teach Methodologies for the Study of the Ancient Document at the Postgraduate School of Archaeological Heritage in Catania.
Since 2010, I have been teaching Epigraphy and Legal Papyrology on the ‘Advanced Course in Roman Law’ at Sapienza University of Rome.
I have taught various subjects within the IUS/18 academic discipline group at other Italian universities (Magna Græcia University of Catanzaro, Mediterranean University of Reggio Calabria and University of Calabria in Rende-Cosenza): History of Roman Law, Institutions of Roman Law, Roman Criminal Law, Roman Law II, Exegesis of the Sources of Roman Law, Roman Law Foundations of European Law, Epigraphy and Legal Papyrology. However, I have delivered courses, seminars and lectures on late antique codifications, the history of public and private Roman law, and epigraphic and papyrological documents at various foreign universities: in particular, at the Law School of Zhongnan University of Economics and Law in Wuhan, the Law School of China University of Political Science and Law in Beijing, and the Universities of Vigo and León, in my capacity as Visiting Professor.
I am participating in the PRIN 2022 project entitled “EXCERPTA. EXploring Contents of Early Roman Period Taken from Anthologies (Sicily, XV-XVI cent.)".
Since 2020, I have been the principal investigator for the Piaceri project entitled ‘CAR – Arangio-Ruiz Correspondence’, in collaboration with the Biblioteca Medicea Laurenziana and Sapienza University of Rome.
I edit the scientific journal (CLASS A) CODEX. Roman Journal of Legal, Political and Social Studies, the series Fra Oriente e Occidente, both published by L’«Erma» di Bretschneider (Rome-Bristol), and the series Collectanea Graeco-Romana. Studies and Tools for Historical, Legal and Philological Research, published by G. Giappichelli Editore, Turin.
I am a member of the Scientific Committee of the oldest Italian scientific journal in the field, the Bullettino dell'Istituto di Diritto romano ‘Vittorio Scialoja’ (CLASS A Journal).
I am a member of several academies, in particular the Italian Society for the History of Law, the International Association for Late Antique Studies, the Accademia Romanistica Costantiniana and the University Council for Papyrology (CUP).
I am the contact person for the Cooperative Agreements between Zhongnan University of Economics and Law (Wuhan, China), Oxford University and the University of Catania, through the Department of Humanities.

International research activities
1. Since December 2015, he has been participating as an External Expert in the ERC “Scriptores iuris Romani” Advanced Grant 2014.
2. He was a member of the Scientific Committee of the international research project entitled “Codex Theodosianus (17BFX033) 2017–2020”, directed by Prof. Huang Meiling of the Law School of Zhongnan University of Economics and Law in Wuhan and funded by the National Social Science Fund of China.
3. He was a member of the Scientific Committee of the international research project entitled “Advocatus in Roman Law (16SFB3008)”. Active since 2016 and directed by Prof. Huang Meiling of the Law School of Zhongnan University of Economics and Law in Wuhan, the research project is funded by the Ministry of Justice of the People’s Republic of China.
4. He is the contact person for the Cooperative Agreement between Zhongnan University of Economics and Law (Wuhan, China) and the University of Catania, through the Department of Humanities.
5. He is the contact person for the Cooperative Agreement between the University of Oxford and the University of Catania, through the Department of Humanities.
6. In March 2021, he was invited by an international partnership – comprising Zhongnan University of Economics and Law, the Sino-Italian Institute (in collaboration with Sapienza University of Rome) and the Roman Law System Centre – to contribute as a Visiting Professor and “international expert” to the project entitled “History of Codification”, led by Prof. Meiling Huang.
