Expected Learning Outcomes
1) Knowledge and understanding
Students will acquire knowledge on 20th century
historiography of art, on the methodology of the art history and the social
history of art, acquiring ability to understand the main methodologies of
art-historical analysis and especially of the study of social backgrounds
2) Applying knowledge and understanding
Students will be able to apply the acquired knowledge
and analysis skills to reading art-historical texts and will understand the
methods of analysis of works in relation to their social contexts
3) Making judgements
Students will independently apply the acquired
knowledge to reading texts or works of art
4) Communication skills
Students will acquire a specific technical language
indispensable for the correct communication of art-historical knowledge
5) Learning skills
Students will acquire the ability to carry out
research in the field of art history and to access bibliographic and
iconographic sources, both printed and digital.
Course Structure

Attendance is not compulsory.
Detailed Course Content
This course includes an introduction to methodological problems and
topics of social history of art (social status of the artist, patronage,
market, public, circulation and reception of the works, collections and
institutions) with reference to the studies and the methods of the most
important historians of art of the twentieth century. The second module will
focus on the relations between patrons and painters.
