ANCIENT THEATERS AND PROMOTION OF CLASSICAL CULTURE

Expected Learning Outcomes
The course aims at introducing the student to the
knowledge of Ancient Theatre from an archaeological, literary, artistic,
architectural and performing-arts point of view, in particular in relation to
the history of the circulation of theatrical performances in archaeological
sites, starting from the twentieth century. The expected goal is to acquire
literary and historical, technical and conceptual knowledge and skills, useful
for the enhancement and promotion of the Greek and Roman archaeological sites
and specifically the ancient buildings for performance, which dot the coasts of
Sicily, Italy, and all around the Mediterranean area.
According to the Dublin
descriptors, students, at the end of the course, will demonstrate:
1) Knowledge and understanding: basic knowledge of the
structures and evolution of Ancient Greek, Hellenistic, and Roman spectacle
buildings.
2) Ability to apply knowledge and understanding:
ability to analyse contemporary staging of ancient dramas in archaeological
sites.
3) Autonomy of judgement: acquisition of a critical
perspective, ability to independently assess the reliability of informations
and interpretations.
4) Communication skills: reflection on most suitable
communication strategies in relation to the communication and promotion of
classical archaeological and literary heritage.

Learning skills: ability to use critically the knowledge acquired in the
course.
Course Structure
The course is divided into:
– frontal lessons
–
in-depth seminars on theatrical buildings, and historical materials (documents,
sets, costumes, sketches) at the archive of the Inda Foundation
