Expected Learning Outcomes

The course intends to acquire through a playful-communicative methodology the basic structural knowledge of Modern Greek equal to level A of the "Common European Framework of Reference" in the different skills, also considering integrated skills. It will also provide a basic introduction to the use of the Modern Greek language and sectorial languages not only as a foreign language test, but also in the field of linguistic knowledge useful for the working world (understanding and compiling everyday material, such as short letters, advertisements, programmes, menus and timetables), such as the tourism and cultural heritage sector.

Furthermore, for interested students, the Course is preparatory to the International Certification of Modern Greek, issued by the Ministry of Greek Education and recognised by MIUR, for which the Chair is responsible

Course Structure

Required Prerequisites

No prerequisites: the course can be easily followed even by students with no knowledge of ancient Greek

Detailed Course Content

1. Listening: can understand the main elements in clear standard language discourse on familiar topics frequently encountered in work, school, leisure time, etc. (e.g., basic personal and family information, shopping, surroundings, work);
2. Reading: can read very short, simple texts related to everyday life or work; can find specific, predictable information in everyday material such as advertisements, programmes, menus and timetables; can understand short, simple personal letters; can understand the description of events, feelings and wishes in personal letters.
3. Interaction: can communicate in simple and routine tasks requiring only a simple and direct exchange of information on familiar topics and activities; can deal with most situations likely to arise whilst travelling in an area where the language is spoken; can participate, unprepared, in conversations on topics that are familiar, of personal interest or pertinent to everyday life (e.g. family, hobbies, work, travel and current events).
4. Spoken Production: can use a series of phrases and sentences to describe in simple terms family and other people, living conditions, school career and current or most recent job; can describe, by linking simple phrases, experiences and events, dreams, hopes and ambitions; can briefly give reasons and explanations for opinions and plans.
5. Written Production: can take simple notes; write short messages on topics related to immediate needs; write a simple personal letter, e.g. thanking someone; write simple and coherent texts on familiar topics or of personal interest.
