Expected Learning Outcomes

According to the Dublin descriptors, students, at the end of the course, will demonstrate:

1. knowledge and understanding

Acquisition of tools for the understanding of news communication in relation to different media (newspapers, tv, web and digital media) and the cultural context, today dominated by the big digital platforms.

2. applying knowledge and understanding

Applying the theoretical acquisitions to news communication and blog design. Capacity to attend profitably, on the basis of the knowledge acquired, specific 2nd cycle university courses in the same scientific field

3. Learning skills

Skills enabling to deal with simple news and communication themes typical of the journalism practice, and to learn and update autonomously the specific knowledge required.

 


Course Structure

Frontal teaching, exercise and practical application concerning: newspapers reading and interpretation (on paper, digital, on the web); writing articles for newspapers, tv and websites; using news historical archives.

Detailed Course Content

        - The main characteristic of traditional journalism.

How to find news / Sources checking / Investigating the places where the real facts happen / How to tell the news

- How News change in the Internet Era.

How to write an article: for a traditional newspaper; for a digital website; for television broadcasting.

- Digital newspapers and magazines

Analysis of the main foreign press websites in spanish and english, with a specific focus on: the website structure; the use of videos and audio files; the financial sustainability plan of the website.

- Fact checking

Fact checking case studies. How to check data or the statements of a given political leader. The checking methods used by the main italian websites specialized in fact checking.

- Photojournalism

Photography in service of news narration

- Investigation journalism

On field investigation. Case study: Analysis of the phenomenon of early school leaving in Sicily and study of educational poverty among minors. The project “Liberi di scegliere”(Free to choose) in Reggio Calabria and Catania.

- The Masters of Contemporary journalism.

Study of the most significant italian journalists, past and present: Indro Montanelli, Enzo Biagi, Eugenio Scalfari, Alfio Russo, Domenico Quirico, Ferruccio De Bortoli.
