Expected Learning Outcomes

The course aims to provide an educational basis on the literature of China, from the origins to the tenth century, by examining the main authors, works, and literary genres and also referring to the relative historical-cultural context. It also provides for the acquisition of linguistic, stylistic and literary-critical methodologies, useful for the analysis and understanding of the anthological passage.

 

Applying knowledge and understanding: Students will be able to understand and relate main historical events in the cultural and literary fields.

 

Making a judgement: students will get the critical skills with the Chinese reality, in everyday life and professional life.

 

Communication skills: students will express their ideas, projects and results got into a complex and articulated way.

 

Learning skills: students will interact with different professional and cultural contexts. They know how to interpret, understand and use independently their expressive capabilities.

Course Structure

Lectures but the teaching provides for the active participation of students during the lessons.

If the teaching is given in a mixed or remote mode, the necessary changes with respect to what was previously stated may be introduced, in order to comply with the program envisaged and reported in the syllabus.

Detailed Course Content

The course will focus on learning the main theoretical and practical issues to understand the evolution of Chinese literature, from the beginning of the Tang dynasty (618-907). Students must study the historical and philosophical contexts and the critical analysis of the most representative literary works. The active participation of students is requested. Besides the reference manuals, additional material will be get during the semester.

 

The main topics to be studied are:

 

- The ancient form of writing

 

- The oracular inscriptions

 

- The oldest literary works: Shujing, Shijing, Yijing

 

-The historical literature: from the Chunqiu to the Shiji and Hanshu

 

- Analysis of the structure of dynastic stories starting from Shiji

 

-The philosophical literature: from the Spring and Autumn to the Tang era

 

- Reading and commenting on passages from the Daodejing, from the Dialogues of Confucius and from the works of Mencius and Zhuangzi

 

-The poetry of the North and the poetry of the South

 

-The Han literature

 

-The Shi, Fu and Yuefu

 

-The literature between the Han and the Tang

 

- The Chuanqi

 

-The Ci

 

-The Shi from the Tang era

 

-The most important Tang poets

Knowledge of the contents of the texts discussed and ability to report on the topics addressed in class. Learning of definitions and technical terms of the discipline. The assessment of the exam will take into account the mastery of the contents and skills acquired, linguistic accuracy and lexical properties, as well as the argumentative ability demonstrated by the candidate.
