The Representation of Women’s Reading in 19th-century France

The class is focused on the representation of the act of reading in 19th-century French society. A short journey through literary as well as not- not-literary works, published during the century, with the aid of some scientific studies, will allow to recreate the diffused thoughts of the time: the prejudice toward the “corruptive” access of young ladies and family mothers to romances; the scepticism toward dangers for families, such as the intoxication (“bovarism”) and the “empathic” approach to the novel page, that was thought to be typical of the women’s public; the formative opportunities offered by the experience of literature.
