English Linguistics and ESP: Prova in itinere, Modulo 3, The Language of Social Media / In-course assessment, Module 3, The Language of Social Media
Registration for the in-course assessment of Module 3 (The Language of Social Media) is now open on Studium (via the “Elaborati” function). Registration will close on Friday, 8 May.
As discussed in class and indicated in the syllabus, the (optional) in-course assessment for Module 3 consists of an oral presentation of a case study. The textbook "Researching Language and Social Media" (Page et al. 2014/2022) and the Module classes provide guidelines on the nature of the case studies and on how to organise a research project on the use of English in social media. All case studies must therefore follow these guidelines. In general, the structure of the oral presentations will be similar to that of the written in-course assessments carried out in Module 2, namely:
- Brief introduction;
- Research question(s), data and methodology (qualitative/quantitative/mixed methods);
- Analysis and discussion of findings;
- Conclusion.
Students will have between 10 and 12 minutes for the oral presentation of their case study. For co-authored presentations, the allotted time will be 15 minutes, and the case study should accordingly be more substantial, either in terms of the number of research questions or the amount of data to be analysed.
All those wishing to take the in-course assessment for Module 3 must register via the “Elaborati” function on Studium by 8 May. To register, students must upload a Word file containing:
- Name(s), surname(s) and matriculation number(s) of the student(s) conducting the case study;
- A brief description of the case study topic (no more than 50 words).
The in-course assessments will take place from the second half of May onwards. The exact number of sessions will depend on the number of registered students. Therefore, the dates of the assessments will be communicated only after registration has closed.
