Methodology of Historical Research

Expected Learning Outcomes
According to the Dublin descriptors, students, at the end of the course, will demonstrate:
1) knowledge and understanding skills such as to reinforce those achieved in the first cycle; ability to elaborate and / or apply original ideas, in a research context.
2) ability to apply knowledge and understanding and ability to solve problems to new or unfamiliar issues, inserted in broader (or interdisciplinary) contexts connected to one's field of study;
3) ability to integrate knowledge and to formulate judgments on the basis of information that is not necessarily complete;
4) ability to communicate one's knowledge clearly and unambiguously to specialist and non-specialist interlocutors.
5) ability to carry out research autonomously.
Special objectives:
To learn the origin and evolution of modern historical criticism. To learn the main types of sources and their use for historical analysis. To acquire the ability to detect, find, process, and work with historical sources. To learn the difference between history and historiography. To learn issues and methodologies applied to Italian and European historiography.
Course Structure
1. In the first part of the course attention will be given to methodological questions, related to historical research and the ways through which history is told. Different types of sources (archival, literary, private/personal, figurative and audio-visual) will be illustrated and analysed.
2. The analysis of the major Italian and European historiographical questions and their interconnectedness with the construction of the Italian state, from its birth to its complete modernization, will be the subject of the second part of the course. The discussion on these topics will represent, moreover, a moment of critical reflection and methodological learning.Required Prerequisites
Good knowledge of Early Modern and Contemporary History; inquisitive mind able to fruitfully contribute to analysis and debates with other students.
Attendance of Lessons
Regular attendance of the course is recommended in order to actively participate in interaction activities with the teacher and in collegial work with colleagues
Detailed Course Content
