
Liborio Pietro BARBARINO
Liborio Pietro Barbarino is Assistant Professor (Ricercatore) in Italian Literary Philology (LIFI/01-B), with national habilitation as Associate Professor in Contemporary Italian Literature (LICO-01/A), at the Department of Humanities, University of Catania.
He serves on the Scientific Board of CINUM (Center for Digital Humanities) at the University of Catania and on the Scientific Committee of the Interuniversity Research Center "Guido Gozzano - Cesare Pavese". He is a member of national scholarly associations in Italian studies, contemporary literature, and Italian literary philology (ADI, MOD, SFLi), as well as the Italian Association for Digital Humanities (AIUCD).
His research focuses on nineteenth- and twentieth-century Italian literature, combining textual philology, lexicography, and digital scholarship in a hermeneutic perspective, with particular attention to Luigi Pirandello, Cesare Pavese, and Giovanni Verga. His work has appeared in leading Italian journals including «Testo», «Studi novecenteschi», «Studi sul settecento e l'ottocento», and «Il Veltro».
He has contributed to the National Edition of Luigi Pirandello's Complete Works, co-editing Maschere nude 10/1 (Mondadori: 2024 digital open access, 2025 print). In Pavese studies, he produced the first critical edition of Lavorare stanca (1936) (Sinestesie, 2020), contributed to the Opera poetica (Mondadori, 2021) by editing the Poesie and unpublished materials from the Laboratorio poetico, and authored the monograph Pavese diverso. Incanto e racconto dai Mari alla Luna (Interlinea, 2022). He has also published on Verga and Verismo, including essays on Verga's reception and contributions on the digital commentary of I Malavoglia.
He currently works on the digital scholarly edition of I Malavoglia within the PNRR CHANGES Verismo Digitale project and serves as coordinator of the hypertext edition in the PRIN Paves-e project.
Research interests: textual philology; contemporary Italian literature; digital critical editions; literary lexicography; digital humanities.
