FRENCH LINGUISTICS AND TRANSLATION

Expected Learning Outcomes

To achieve oral and written skills in French at C1 Plus level (Framework).  

According to the Dublin descriptors, students, at the end of the course, will demonstrate:

1)    Knowledge and understanding (principles of audiovisual translation; mechanisms of neologism formation)

2)    Applying knowledge and understanding (researching French neologisms in specialised online resources; applying taxonomies in lexicography)

3)    Making judgements (expressing a personal opinion on a topical issue; developing a mature translation awareness of French literary or topical texts)

4)    Communication skills (arguing, selecting examples from a corpus; understanding an authentic audiovisual document; summarising orally and in writing; synthesising the main ideas of an argumentative text; produce sociolinguistically appropriate utterances)

5)    Learning skills (developing personal strategies for self-learning)

Course Structure

Lectures, multimedia and interactive activities (independent and guided individual exercises).

Attendance of Lessons

Attendance is not compulsory.

Detailed Course Content

Comparative analysis of the main translation strategies (press and literary articles). Critical study of the stylistic aspects of audiovisual translation as an intercultural communication. Critical study of the neological formations in lexicography.
