Expected Learning Outcomes

The acquired knowledge will aim to understand the origin and evolution of modern historical criticism. To learn the main types of sources and their use for historical analysis. Critical capacity will be reached about the ability to detect, find, process, and work with historical sources, together with the knowledge about the difference between history and historiography and to learn issues and methodologies applied to Italian and European historiography, strengthening the capacity to combine knowledge and comprehension.

Detailed Course Content

1. In the first part of the course attention will be given to methodological questions, related to historical research and the ways through which history is told. Different types of sources (archival, literary, private/personal, figurative and audio-visual) will be illustrated and analysed.

2. The analysis of the major Italian and European historiographical questions and their interconnectedness with the construction of the Italian state, from its birth to its complete modernization, will be the subject of the second part of the course. The discussion on these topics will represent, moreover, a moment of critical reflection and methodological learning.
