Expected Learning Outcomes

The course aims to provide and analyze the conceptual notions of the various stages of development, with particular attention to early childhood and adolescence and to aypical development during the entire life cycle.

At the end of the course the student will have acquired the following objectives:

1) Knowledge and understanding;

demonstrate knowledge and understanding of the various stages of cognitive and emotional development of humans, as well as some cutting-edge issues of atypical developmental aspects during the life cycle with the support of recent textbooks;

2) Ability to apply knowledge and understanding;

be able to apply and understand knowledge on psychological development in order to demonstrate a professional approach to work, and possess adequate skills both to devise and support scientific arguments and to solve methodological problems.

3) Autonomy of judgment;

the student will be able to collect and interpret experimental data useful for determining autonomous judgments on the various phases of the life cycle, including reflection on scientific or ethical issues connected to them.

4) Communication skills;

adequately communicate scientific information, ideas and methodological solutions to specialist and non-specialist interlocutors;

5) Learning skills;

develop the skills and abilities necessary to undertake further studies with a high degree of autonomy.

Detailed Course Content

The course is structured as indicated:

A) From early childhood to old age (7 CFU);

B) Laboratory on Special Educational Needs (2 CFU).

 

Module A (7 CFU):

Developmental psychology: themes and contexts,

The approaches and theories of developmental psychology,

Research methods in developmental psychology,

Developmental biology: genes, nervous system, brain and environment,

Physical, motor and perceptual development,

Emotional development and attachment

Language and communication,

Cognitive development: the origins of knowledge,

The development of cognitive functions,

Intelligence and learning,

Parents, peers and social relationships,

Social identities: gender and ethnicity,

Morality, altruism and aggression,

Atypical development,

Psychological development over the life span.

 

Module B (2 CFU):

Labels in search of function,

From the BES evaluation to the treatment,

Technologies at school,

Synergies with the context,

Special school needs.
