HISTORY OF MODERN AND CONTEMPORARY PHILOSOPHY

At the end of the course students will acquire: 1) knowledge and understanding skills; 2) ability to apply knowledge and understanding; 3) autonomy of judgment; 4) communication skills; 5) learning ability.

A – Method problems (1 ECTS, Prof. Giancarlo Magnano San Lio)

B - Science and philosophy in the modern age (1 ECTS, Prof. Luigi Ingaliso): The Renaissance (Telesio, Bruno, Campanella), Galilei, Bacon, Hobbes, Newton.

C – Science and philosophy in the contemporary age (5 ECTS, Prof. Giancarlo Magnano San Lio): The philosophy of Romanticism (Schleiermacher, W. von Humboldt, Goethe), the Positivism (Comte, Stuart Mill, Spencer), the Neokantism (Rickert, Windelband, Cassirer), the German Historicism (Dilthey, Spengler), Freud, Weber, Jaspers, Horkheimer, Scheler, Plessner, Gehlen, the Neopositivism (Schlick, Carnap), Popper, Wittgenstein, Kuhn, Lakatos. Feyerabend, the analytic philosophy (Quine).

D - Philosophy, history, visions of the world (2 ECTS, Prof. Giancarlo Magnano San Lio).

A: E. Cassirer, Introduzione alla Storia della filosofia moderna, vol. IV: I sistemi posthegeliani, Torino, Einaudi, 1978, I, pp. 13-39.

B and C: It is recommended the use of a good high school manual (for example: N. Abbagnano / G. Fornero, La filosofia, Torino, Paravia, 2009, vol. 2-3; or another manual that may be agreed with the teacher); furthermore, the authors and the topics dealt with should be explored in a university manual (for example: M. Dal Pra, Storia della filosofia, Milano, Vallardi, 1976 sgg., voll. VII-X; or: L. Geymonat, Storia del pensiero filosofico e scientifico, Milano, Garzanti, 1972 sgg., voll. II-XI). The pages to be studied, for this part, are a total of about 600.
