Expected Learning Outcomes

The course has the primary objective of providing knowledge and explanations of geo-anthropic facts and developing the following skills:

ü  knowledge and understanding of the main cultural issues of the contemporary and globalized world, such as, for example, the fundamental role of human work in the building of different places, landscapes, values and cultural signs;

ü  the ability to recognize and describe the single geographical elements and the interrelationships between the elements of a landscape at various geographical scales;

ü  the ability to apply the method of analogies and differences to regional landscapes at different geographical scales, identifying the significant physical elements and the historical, artistic, architectural and environmental evidences;

ü  the ability to make independent judgments on the knowledge acquired and to make decisions in a responsible and conscious way;

ü  the ability to use the knowledge acquired to document, report and effectively communicate particular aspects of landscapes related to the issues of decay, conservation and enhancement.

Course Structure

Frontal lessons, seminars, projection of documentary films, field lessons and excursions organized by the teacher during the course.

Detailed Course Content

The New Cultural Geography for the safeguarding of local identities and the promotion of intercultural dialogue and democratic coexistence; Landscape as a result of the relationship between man and nature and visible proof of regional culture; Landscapes shaped by agricultural activities: agricultural externalities, gardens, art and architecture; Globalization, contemporary international socio-economic interconnections and the new hierarchy of places; The local and universal cultural heritage; Wine and food as elements of protection of local identity and culture; The food problem, between availability, genuineness and cultural habits; Local social and cultural ritual food and wine events; Nature, environment and sustainability issues; Ecomuseum: a widespread museum focused on the identity of a place; Cultural geography and tourism: cultural heritage, territoriality and identity, authenticity, art, traditions, cultural, urban and rural itineraries.
