Expected Learning Outcomes

Students will be able to read and understand simple written and oral texts in standard Arabic on daily topics and to produce simple messages to ask and give personal information;


Students will be introduced to the study of fundamental morphologic, syntactic and lexical aspects of standard Arabic and will be able to compare different grammar systems;

Students will be supplied with translation method in order to approach simple texts and to translate messages from Arabic into Italian and from Italian into Arabic.

Course Structure

Teaching will take place through lectures, participated lessons and group activities and practice with language expert collaborators.

Attendance of Lessons

Course attendance is optional.

Non-attending students must necessarily contact teachers.

Detailed Course Content

Basic elements of phonology, morphology and syntax of Standard Arabic:
  • introduction to Modern Standard Arabic;
  • alphabet: spelling, pronunciation and graphics;
  • root and form;
  • article and tanwin;
  • name and declension;
  • gender and number;
  • using the dual;
  • personal pronouns;
  • nominal sentence;
  • al-idafa;
  • adjectives and their concordance;
  • interrogative sentence;
  • demonstrative pronouns/adjectives;
  • triliteral roots and past of regular verbs;
  • verbal sentence;
  • present of regular verbs;
  • subjunctive and conditional;
  • imperative;
  • future;
  • numerals;
  • particles, prepositions and adverbs;
  • periphrases to translate the verb “to have”;
  • main derivative forms of regular triliteral verb;
  • masdar and participles;
Reading and textual analysis and translation.
