Expected Learning Outcomes

According to the Dublin descriptors, students, at the end of the course, will demonstrate: 

1) knowledge and understanding:

The aim of this course is the acquisition of linguistic, communicative, and metalinguistic knowledge and competencies according to B2+ level of the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages. Students will be able to understand authentic and specialized texts, and to catch their cultural (implicit) aspects. Furthermore, they will refine their analysis skills and their translation practices knowledge by discovering and exploring a domain linked to the langues de spécialité (ESP): tourism, diplomacy, and science.

2) applying knowledge and understanding:

Students will acquire some deep knowledge about French vocabulary and terminology, syntax and textuality in order to communicate in an appropriate, coherent, and efficient way. Furthermore, students will be able to use and combine knowledge in a particular context of Corpus linguistics about langues de spécialité.

3) making judgements:

Students will be able to formulate independent judgements, to approach and to explore, in a flexible and critical way, texts related to touristic, diplomatic, and scientific fields. They will be confident with the contexts wich will be proposed.

4) communication skills:

The course will allow students to acquire the main tools to communicate and interact in an appropriate, complex, and articulated way in a specialized context.

5) learning skills:

Students will be able to implement useful cognitive strategies to improve and handle their learning and study method and to use their skills in French for specific purposes.

Required Prerequisites

A B1/B2 French language proficiency level according to the CEFR.

Detailed Course Content

The course, in a first part, aims to provide a general overview of French for specific purposes starting from Sociolinguistics, and then it proceeds with a study of linguistic aspects of vocabulary, morphology, syntax, and textual variation. Secondly, it includes notions of Corpus linguistics, as a discipline providing methodologies and tools useful for a systematic study of Languages for specific purposes. Then, some texts belonging to various sectors will be analyzed, such as the the français du tourisme, the français de la diplomatie et des relations internationales, and the français des sciences et techniques. Finally, some elements of specialized translation will be introduced.
