STORIA DELLA LINGUA ITALIANA A - L
Academic Year 2022/2023 - Teacher: Gabriella ALFIERIExpected Learning Outcomes

Structuring the metalinguistic reflection on changes in the phonomorphological, lexical and syntactic system in the transition from Latin to Italian;
Developing basic skills for understanding and linguistic reading of texts
Developing text writing skills
Course Structure
The course will adopt an interactive approach, aimed at making students capable of applying the "rules" of linguistic and textual use of Italian with full mastery.
In introductory lessons and in workshop activities, paths of external and internal linguistic history will be built, with exercises aimed at transmitting metalinguistic skills suitable for a conscious active and passive knowledge of Italian language.
Required Prerequisites
Basic knowledge of Italian cultural, literary and political history. Mastery of historical-geographical coordinates (ability to place an author or work in the century and cultural current to which it belongs and to situate a city or region in its geographical context).
Active and passive proficiency in the grammatical, lexical, and syntactic structures of the Italian language (ability to analyze grammatical, logical, and period and ability to paraphrase).
Failure to know the prerequisites may jeopardize passing the exam.
To make up for the lack of prerequisites, it is recommended to attend zero courses in Italian grammar and tutoring activities that will take place during office hours.
Detailed Course Content
External linguistic history: evolution from spoken Latin to the Tuscan dialect and the Italian language at all structural levels and in all varieties of use, focusing on the dynamics of italianization in written and oral communication (literature, religion, politics, bureaucracy, mass media) Internal linguistic history: observation of the principal phonetic, lexical and semantic, morphological changes in the passage from Latin to Italian; Grammar and stylistics: inter-relations among the various linguistic levels and analysis of different kinds of literary and non-literary texts.

Learning Assessment
Learning Assessment Procedures
The exam is divided into two parts: a written test and an oral test.
The written test can be taken as an in-progress test during the semester, or directly during the examination appointments.
The oral test will be taken during the examination appointments.
IN ITINERE REHEARSAL
Rules:
There will be an iterated written test on modules A and B during the semester.
Mode:
The test will consist of:
1) "closed" answer questions on D'Achilles, Brief Historical Grammar. The questions will aim to ascertain knowledge of historical grammar on all levels of language;
2) "closed" answer questions on Module B textbook (definitions of concepts or phenomena and/or analysis exercises).
FINAL EXAMINATION.
Written test: those who have not taken or passed the in itinere test will have to take the written test (the mode of the test is similar to that of the in itinere test);
Oral test: discussion of the written test and questions on:
- Module A: Marazzini (chapters 1-21), paraphrases of ancient and modern texts and, with reference to texts, analysis by language levels (phonographic, morphological, semantic-lexical and syntactic);
- Module B: period analysis on nineteenth- and twentieth-century texts.
The assessment of the exam will take into account the candidate's mastery of the content and skills acquired, linguistic accuracy and lexical property, and argumentative ability demonstrated.
Verification of learning may also be conducted electronically, should conditions require it.
