The aim of the course is to
provide the conceptual and methodical knowledge that constitutes the
indispensable basis for study: this knowledge is aimed not only at
understanding (as envisaged by DD.1: Applying knowledge and understanding)
French literature as a cultural heritage and as a place of production of
ideological, thematic and linguistic models active in the European sphere, but
also at developing an autonomous capacity for reflection (as envisaged by DD.3:
Making judgements) on the political, social and ethical issues raised by the
study of history.
A specific aim of the course
is the acquisition of a competence (as envisaged by DD.2: Applying knowledge
and understanding) relating to the recognition of the languages experimented,
in the time span indicated from time to time, by certain French writers in
relation to the variation of genres, audiences, the intentions guiding the
writing, and the historically determined situation in which this act of
communication takes place.
Particular attention will therefore be paid to the
anthological or integral reading of the works and to the grammatical analysis
of the text, from the metric-prosodic level to the lexical and morpho-syntactic
level, with a focus on the recognition in the construction of the text of isotopic
series, global signification and the dialectic between individuality and
suprapersonal codes.
The
skills of analysing and researching the signification of the literary text will
be systematically exercised in the classroom and in individual study and
finally ascertained during a compulsory written test preparatory to the oral
examination.

The
Representation of Women’s Reading in 19th-century France
The
class is focused on the representation of the act of reading
in 19th-century French society. A short journey through literary as well as
not- not-literary works, published during the century, with the aid of some
scientific studies, will allow to recreate the diffused thoughts of the time:
the prejudice toward the “corruptive” access of young ladies and family mothers
to romances; the scepticism toward dangers for families, such as the
intoxication (“bovarism”) and the “empathic” approach to the novel page, that
was thought to be typical of the women’s public; the formative opportunities
offered by the experience of literature.
