Anthropology of Heritage and Tourism

Academic Year 2026/2027 - Teacher: ALESSANDRO LUTRI

Expected Learning Outcomes

The course in Anthropology of Cultural Heritage aims to provide knowledge and competences useful for:

1)    acquiring knowledge of heritage-making processes (both local and global) in relation to territories and local communities;

2)    applying knowledge of territorial heritage (tangible and intangible) in order to foster, through collaborative ethnographic methodologies, the social participation of individuals and communities in its protection and enhancement;

3)    fostering independent judgement on heritage processes;

4)    improving public communication skills regarding heritage processes;

5)  developing the learning skills needed to independently gather documentation on heritage processes, accessing bibliographic sources and reference tools, so as to pursue further study autonomously.

Course Structure

Teaching will be organised into a series of lessons, some held with the participation of other lecturers or experts, and classroom presentations by attending students on the collection of essays included in the syllabus concerning ecomuseology. During the lessons, dialogic discussion with the class will be favoured, in order to better assess the topics addressed critically. Non-attending students will submit summaries of at least two of the essays prior to the oral examination.

Attendance of Lessons

Attendance is not compulsory.

Detailed Course Content

The course focuses on the strong (political, cultural and social) link between communities, heritage (tangible and intangible) and territory, highlighting:

1.     the study of popular culture in Italy, from the late nineteenth century to the emergence of the heritage paradigm;

2.     the concept of cultural heritage through the critical tools of anthropology, showing that heritage (tangible and intangible) is not a distinctive, given feature of communities, but the result of a process of political and cultural selection;

3.     ecomuseology as a new, innovative and participatory form of enhancement of territorial heritage (tangible and intangible);

4.   the role of heritage anthropology between critique and participation.
