DIAGNOSTICS AND MATERIALS FOR THE RESTORATION OF CULTURAL HERITAGE

The main objectives of the course are to provide the foundational knowledge required to understand thecharacteristics of materials commonly used in cultural heritage, as well as to contribute to the understanding ofthe principal degradation processes and the materials employed in restoration. The course also aims to providethe knowledge necessary to enable the identification of materials and to select the most appropriate analyticaltechniques for their study.

In particular, the course will enable students to acquire:

 1. Knowledge and Understanding - Knowledge and understanding of pigments and natural and artificial stone supports used in works of art,the main degradation phenomena, and materials used in restoration.

 2.Applying Knowledge and Understanding - The ability to apply knowledge and understanding of the principal analytical methods used for stonematerials.

 3.Making Judgements - The ability to develop independent judgement through the analysis of case studies.

 4. Communication Skills and Learning Skills - Communication and learning skills developed through interaction with instructors and the completion ofthe final examination.

 The course objectives also contribute to the acquisition of: a) knowledge of artistic phenomena and material culture from antiquity to the contemporary period, along withthe ability to understand the main methodologies of archaeological and art-historical analysis; b) historical, technical, and museological knowledge within the broader field of cultural heritage, both tangibleand intangible, and the ability to relate cultural history to ancient and modern art.

Students will develop the ability to apply knowledge and understanding in order to: a) classify and describe monuments and artefacts within archaeological or art-historical contexts; b) carry out technical investigations and surveys on artistic and archaeological heritage; c) conduct concrete analyses of monuments, artefacts, and documents, placing them within their relevanthistorical, geographical, and literary contexts.

Finally, participation in guided visits to monuments, museums, and laboratories, together with assessmentthrough an open-ended written test, will contribute to the development of: 1.the ability to engage independently and critically with diverse professional contexts, transferring andadapting acquired skills and competences; 2. effective oral and written communication skills, suitable for both specialist and general audiences, usingappropriate registers; 3. the necessary competences to independently carry out documentation and in-depth studies in specificfields.

Assessment will be conducted via an open-ended test. An oral examination will be held for clarification purposes or at the student's request.
