Expected Learning Outcomes
1) Knowledge and
Understanding of the principal methodologies of historical analysis, with
reference to interdisciplinary competences relating to literary and
philological analysis and documentary research:
students will be enabled to learn the fundamental
features of medieval civilisation and will fully understand the reading and interpretation
of the texts included in the syllabus.
2) Applying
Knowledge and Understanding, to be demonstrated through the ability to
contextualise archaeological and art-historical monuments and artefacts within
their respective periods of production, devising and structuring effective
arguments and solving problems within their field of study:
students will apply the knowledge acquired during the
lessons through an in-itinere assessment and the final examination. During the
lessons, students will be enabled to fully understand the fundamental aspects
of the medieval period and to apply these competences in the examination.
3) Making
Judgements, to be achieved through the ability to process the data deemed
useful for drawing appropriate conclusions, critically evaluating the principal
methodological tools of the humanities:
students will study the discipline through texts
characterised by clarity of exposition and accessibility. Starting from the
texts included in the syllabus, in each lesson the instructor will foster
critical thinking and independent judgement in the student.
4) Communication
Skills, expressed in the ability to communicate orally and in writing,
effectively and appropriately, to both specialist and general audiences, using
registers suited to each recipient:
the lessons and the teaching activity carried out by
the instructor will foster the development of students' communication skills,
achieved through their active participation in the lessons. The instructor will
encourage students' on-topic contributions, thereby promoting their expository
abilities.
5) Learning Skills,
expressed in the ability to access bibliographic sources, both printed and
digital, and the principal reference tools, within a professional approach to
their work:
the adoption of texts carefully selected by the
instructor will have the fundamental aim of enhancing learning skills. During
the lessons, students will be provided with numerous supporting tools, such as
summary outlines and chronological tables, in order to facilitate their
learning of the discipline.
Medieval
History teaching aims to convey the basic knowledge of the historic period that
formed the Euromediterranean area from the Fifth to the Sixteenth Century. It
will be demonstrated during the course of lessons as every single historic
event, for example, the incoronation to Emperor of Charlemagne on the Christmas
Night of year 800, can be learned fully if we reconstruct organically the
history of events, of the custom, of the mentality, of the religion, of the
social-economic structure in the Medieval period.
Course Structure
The teaching is divided into two parts that are closely
related. The general course aims to the knowledge of the peculiar
characteristics of the cultural, economics, philosophical, religious and social
foundations from the Edict of Tolerance (313) to the action of Martin Luther
(1483-1546) inside the variegated world of the medieval society (centuries
IV-XVI). The monographic course investigates the utilization, the culture, the
reception and the spiritual heritage of Medieval Civilization (centuries IV-XVI).
Attendance of Lessons
Attendance is not compulsory.

Description of historic events that have characterized
the Middle Ages. (centuries V-XVI). The course pays particular attention to the
use, contents and spiritual heritage of Medieval Civilization (V-XVI
centuries).
