German linguistics and translation

Academic Year 2023/2024 - Teacher: BEATE ANNA BAUMANN

Expected Learning Outcomes

The course aims to provide students with receptive and productive language skills in order to achieve the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages C1 level. The course is designed for students to develop a specific linguistic, cultural and symbolic competence with particular reference to stylistic and textual analysis and translation of texts belonging to intercultural literature.

According to the Dublin descriptors, students will be able to understand complex, long texts and construct their implicit meaning; to produce clear, well-constructed, detailed texts on complex topics, showing confident control of text structure, connectors and cohesive elements; to translate complex texts, taking into account in particular the equivalence of their aesthetic effect; to express themselves fluently and naturally, using the language flexibly and effectively for social and academic purposes; to handle, through a contrastive approach, not only the German language, but also Italian autonomously and critically, in order to develop a solid linguistic awareness.

Course Structure

Frontal teaching, group work and presentations.

Attendance of Lessons

Attendance is not compulsory.

Detailed Course Content

The course will focus on the acquisition of specific skills related to issues of multilingualism. They include 1) working on a project on linguistic landscapes and the role of the German language, 2) linguistic and stylistic analysis of literary texts and the translation of them. Students will learn practical methods, based on the principles of comparative methodology, to analyse transcultural literature texts. These texts are particularly useful to identify stylistic choices and develop appropriate translation strategies in order to achieve a stylistic/textual, symbolic and intercultural competence.
