TEACHING OF GEOGRAPHY

Expected Learning Outcomes

According to the Dublin descriptors, students, at the end of the course, will demonstrate:

  • knowledge and understanding of the principals conceptual, epistemological and educational nodes related to the teaching of Geography in schools;
  • the ability to recognize and analyze  the topics studied using various  tools, such as  photographic images, satellite images and graphics;
  • the ability to trasform knowledge into fundamental practical skills,

for example: developing  a curriculum and designing teaching activities, choosing a textbook, setting up field lessons, and evaluating learning processes;

  • spatial analysis skills in order to be able to evaluate and interpret the meaning of spatial differences and to improve the understanding of the links between historical-cultural, social and cultural dynamics ;
  • the ability  to develop independent judgment on the knowledge acquired and to make a decisions in a responsible and conscious way;
  • the ability  to apply service learning: to observ, discover, understand  the territory, to promote student’s civic skills, relations with the community, local authorities and the world of work;
  • the ability to put at the service of the community the knowledge and values acquired by concretizing the territorial education and the “public geography”.

Course Structure

The course will take place through traditional classroom lectures, in which will be used power point modules prepared by the lecturer, projection of documentaries, seminars and educational excursions.

Attendance of Lessons

Attendance is not compulsory.

Detailed Course Content

Modulo A (3 ECTS)

Regional geography themes, analysis of the regional "fractures" of the Mediterranean geopolitical System and understanding of the differences of social, cultural, demographic and economic elements. Sicilian landscape: the evolution of the territory and the change in the landscape. Literary sources as a tool for geography teaching: description of Sicily through tales, essays and news events.
