Expected Learning Outcomes

According to the Dublin descriptors, students, at the end of the course, will demonstrate:

1) knowledge and understanding in a post-secondary level field of study and knowing the fundamental themes in one's field of study;

2) ability to apply knowledge and understanding in order to demonstrate a professional approach and possess adequate skills both to conceive and support arguments and to solve problems in one's field of study

3) learning skills necessary to undertake subsequent studies with a high degree of autonomy.

In the specific case, aim of the course is To provide adequate historical knowledge of the modern age, especially with regards to its breaks and discontinuities, also in light of the historical debate and of the diversity and multiplicity of the original sources. To become able to recognize the complexity of any historiographic construction.

Detailed Course Content

The two main goals of the class will be acquired thanks to a didactic path divided in two modules:

  1. The first, focused on early modern history and on its role in the construction of a notion of universal civilization, will follow a diachronic approach, starting from the end of the XV century up to the Seventies of XVIII century (7CFU)
  2. The second module will delve into some crucial nodes of history in the modern age  by analysing the political and cultural entanglements stemming from the marriage agreements in the first half of the 16th century between some southern and northern nobles, at a time of particular effervescence in the Italian peninsula (2CFU)
