History of Education
Academic Year 2023/2024 - Teacher:
Maria VOLPICELLI
Expected Learning Outcomes
The course aims at providing the basic knowledge concerning
the major currents of thought and the main protagonists of the history of
pedagogy from ancient times to the contemporary age. Particular in-depth study
will then be dedicated to the history of education in the Renaissance and
modern ages through the reading and analysis of some specific texts on the
topic.
According to the Dublin descriptors, at the end of the
course, students will have to achieve the following specific learning objectives:
1) Knowledge and understanding
Knowing the categories and models of investigation
used in the discipline, through the understanding of the most relevant issues
in the history of education; grasping the main themes addressed in the texts
taken as reference, which must be adequately analysed and interpreted.
2) Applying knowledge and understanding
Knowing how to associate the theoretical and
methodological contents learnt with the periodisation and temporal contextualisation
of the different authors examined; being able to provide the most coherent
picture possible of the various topics addressed, also from an
interdisciplinary perspective.
3) Making judgements
Knowing how to summarise the various pedagogical
approaches examined and being able to express, through different sources of
historical-educational reconstruction, an autonomous capacity for
critical-interpretative elaboration.
4) Communication skills
Knowing how to appropriately use the specialistic lexicon,
knowing how to communicate and share the complexity and internal articulations
of educational issues concerning a specific author or historical period.
5) Learning skills
Knowing
how to set up an autonomous in-depth study path of the topics addressed in the
course; knowing how to grasp the possible research developments from a methodological
perspective, while also taking into consideration their impact on other
disciplines.
Course Structure
In addition to the lectures, the course includes seminars on specific
topics with the collaboration of specialists.
Attendance of Lessons
Attendance is not compulsory
Detailed Course Content
The course includes an introductory section concerning an examination of
the main moments in the history of pedagogy from ancient times up to the more
recent perspectives. The course will then move on to a more specialised section
dedicated to an in-depth study of the history of education in the Renaissance and
the modern ages, through the study of the teaching methods of a number of
anatomy professors at the University of Padua, from Vesalius to Girolamo
Fabrizi d'Acquapendente, through the understanding of Francisco Sanchez's
'critical pedagogy' and through the reading and commentary of Comenius' Scuola dell’Infanzia (School of Infancy).
