INSTITUTIONS OF ANALYTICAL PHILOSOPHY

Expected Learning Outcomes

1) Knowledge and comprehension: students will acquire basic knowledge of the history and theory of analytical philosophy, and they will explore the main sub-fields and understand the most important issues.

2) Ability to apply knowledge and comprehension: students will exercise their ability to express appropriately a problem, a thesis, or an argument, analyzing them individually or with others.

3) Autonomy of judgment: students will acquire the ability to express their own theoretical intuitions, and assess them in comparison with the ones argued for in the relevant literature.

4) Communicative abilities: students will acquire the ability to express, and discuss with other people, positions, points of view, arguments.

5) Learning abilities: students will learn to deal with a text of analytical philosophy and extract information methodically from it.

Lectures; class discussion (especially on text 3).

Attendance is not compulsory. 

Detailed Course Content

Introduction to the methodological principles and to the paradigm of analytical philosophy. Frege: sense and meaning, grammatical form and logical form. Wittgenstein: Tractatus and Philosophical Investigations. Neopositivistic verificationism. Possible worlds. Quine’s semantic skepticism. Truth and verification. Language and metaphysics.

Reading and comment of Wittgenstein’s «Philosophical Investigations».
