Expected Learning Outcomes

The course aims at providing the basic knowledge concerning the main themes and issues of general pedagogy. This will take place through a preliminary examination of the educational theories of the main protagonists in the history of contemporary pedagogy, as well as through the reading and analysis of the programme’s required texts by Immanuel Kant, Antonio Labriola and Giuseppe Lombardo Radice.

According to the Dublin descriptors, at the end of the course, students will have to achieve the following specific learning objectives:

 

1) Knowledge and understanding

Understanding some fundamental aspects inherent to the concept of General Pedagogy, gaining knowledge regarding the historical path of General Pedagogy and the educational strategies related to it in its most representative moments; gaining a clear understanding of the major currents of thought through the work and critical reflection of the major representatives of contemporary pedagogy; understanding the concepts set out in the required reading pedagogical texts.

 

2) Applying knowledge and understanding

Being able to use the knowledge acquired to understand and explore themes and issues relating to one's own field of study and research, and also beyond.

 

3) Making judgements

 Being able to formulate personal interpretations around the discipline’s themes, in particular regarding the thoughts contained in the pedagogical texts being read and commented upon and their social, ethical and scientific implications.

 

4) Communication skills

Knowing how to express oneself correctly in Italian, knowing how to appropriately use the specialistic lexicon, knowing how to distinguish between the different theories and the different pedagogical models.

 

5) Learning skills

Knowing how to compare the programme’s contents, also moving transversally to the different areas indicated; being able to autonomously develop research by using the tools acquired during the course.

Course Structure

Frontal lectures in which the educational theories of a number of authoritative pedagogists are explained; reading, analysis and commentary on the pedagogical works of the authors indicated in the programme; lessons on specific topics with the collaboration of specialists.

Detailed Course Content

In addition to providing a general overview of the pedagogical theories of a number of significant exponents of Western thought, the course is dedicated to the analysis and commentary of the pedagogy lessons of Immanuel Kant, of the pedagogy lessons held by Antonio Labriola at ''La Sapienza'' University and of Lezioni di didattica e ricordi di esperienza magistrale by Giuseppe Lombardo Radice.
