Abstract
The aim of this paper is to analyze the transition from mediterranean polytheisms to christian monotheism from an historical and, above all, theoretical prospective. The life and work of Emperor Julian (360–363) constitute a fundamental junction to understand the richness of what has been lost and the consequences of the prevalence of an exclusive and anthropocentric conception of the sacred, which has always been enemy of philosophy. The analysis pays particular attention to the issue of persecutions that paganism suffered by the winner christians. The title refers to a passage by Salustio, Julian’s counselor and friend.
