Expected Learning Outcomes

Students will become acquainted with the most important most important phases of the book history; they will know the process of books production and preservation from the Antiquity to the 19th century; they will know catalogues, repositories, digital libraries, data bases about bookbinding and provenance. (Dublin Descriptors I level degree)

Detailed Course Content

The course presents the history of manuscripts from the Antiquity to the invention of printed books in 15th century. Particular attention will be given to the physical process, the techniques of manufacturing, the different forms of books (wooden tablets, scrolls, manuscripts, printed books).

Principal topics are: Manuscripts from Antiquity to 15th century: materials, techniques, circulation and preservation. Medieval handwritten in monastic and lay workshops.

From manuscripts to printed books: the incunables.

The printed books until 1830: materials, techniques, circulation and preservation. Bookbinding from Antiquity to 19th century: materials, techniques, bookbinders.

Readers and owners of manuscripts and printed books: material evidences and recording.
