DIAGNOSTICS AND MATERIALS FOR THE RESTORATION OF CULTURAL HERITAGE

Expected Learning Outcomes
The main objectives of the course are to provide the
basis for understanding the characteristics of materials commonly used in
cultural heritage and to contribute to the knowledge of the main degradation
processes and materials used for restoration. The course also aims to provide
the knowledge to allow the recognition of materials and to identify the most
appropriate analytical techniques for their study.
In particular, the course will allow students to
acquire:
1) Knowledge and understanding of pigments and natural
and artificial stone material support of works of art, the main degradation
phenomena and materials for restoration
2) Ability to apply knowledge and understanding of the
main analytical methods of stone materials
3) Autonomy of judgment through the analysis of case
studies
4) Communication skills and Learning ability through
dialogue with teachers and taking the exam
Course Structure
The lessons will be frontal with the discussion of case studies and the
carrying out of simple practical tests.

• Minerals and rocks used in cultural heritage
• How to recognize materials and classification notes
• Precious rocks from the Mediterranean area
• What is degradation
• Main types of degradation and their causes
• Some types of materials for restoration
• Analysis methods (macroscopic and microscopic
observations, determination of composition)
