Learning Objectives

The course aims to provide the acquisition of the knowledge, both in a historical-diachronic and stylistic-formal key, of topic moments and works concerning the thematic representation of the journey in the historical development of Italian literature. Moreover, at the end of the course, the student will be able to recognize the essential characteristics that connote the theme and its presence in the historical development of Italian literature, evaluating its formal characteristics, stylistic and symbolic.


Course Structure

Lectures. Reading and writing Lab. Students will work either individually and in group led by the teacher.


Detailed Course Content

A) Methodological and foundational questions about the concepts of space, travel and geography in fictional literature (1 CFU).

B) Travelers and descriptions of real and ideal travels in Italian literature of thirteenth and fourteenth century: the exile, the pilgrim, the merchant, the stateless person (2 CFU).

C) The rediscovery of the antique and the discovery of new continents and ideal spaces in Italian literature between the fifteenth and seventeenth centuries: chronicles from the past, chronicles from new worlds, utopias (2 CFU).

D) New models of travel and travelers in Italian letters at the origins of modernity (eighteenth and nineteenth centuries): Grand Tour, Bildungsroman, wandering and flânerie (2 CFU).

E) Vittorini and the initiation novel (2 CFU).
