Expected Learning Outcomes

This first part of the “Tourism and Cultural Business Management” course will focus on the general notion of business management and on the specific notion of tourism business management. It is a general and introductory notion that led to a wide and open idea of tourism business.

Tourism business management has developed to answer the needs of such a wide and varied group of organisations made even more necessary the identification of new management and enhancement strategies.

That part of the course will focus on the general notion of management and on the specific notion of tourism business management, referring specifically to the definition of the sector, the policies and strategies used to boost it at the national and international level, the theoretical notions related to the management of the sector. In this sense starting point is the awareness that these organisations show some features that influence the way they operate.

Case studies and examples will be used to apply the theoretical notions to concrete cases. 

Course Structure

The course consists of participative lectures. Group works will be used to help students to apply the theoretical notions to case studies that the teacher or the same students will choose. Guest lectures will also be possibly organised so that experts will share their experience in managing a cultural organisation

-       The firm as a social and economic institution, its systemic nature, its forms, its components

-       The ideal circumstances of its administration and the conditions for its success

-       Organisational models, organisational variables, organisational structures, evolution of organisation theory

-       Instruments to verify the general conditions of the success of the business system

-       The definition of tourism business: the main problems in the identification of the sector

-       Management of the tourism sector: basic notions          

-       The economic analysis: the main themes and issues     

-       Local, national and international importance of the tourism business

-       Tourism business management

-       Tourism business strategy

-       Human resources management
