Research project

Title: PaciniInRete. Annotated catalogue of primary sources relating to Giovanni Pacini's opera production in the years 1824-1835

The research project aims to document the knowledge on the composer Giovanni Pacini through the establishment of a special database in which information on musical sources and librettos, concerning the Pacinian opera repertoire of the years 1824-1835, are integrated with other information taken from the biography of the author or from the newspapers of the time or from archive funds, so as to be able to shed light both on the context of production of the works examined and on that of their reception. In this perspective, the study of the network of professional relationships that underlie Pacini's artistic activity as a composer and director of the productions promoted by the theatrical impresario Domenico Barbaja assumes particular interest. The decision to concentrate the research on a chronological interval limited to the eleven years between the beginning of Pacini's working relationship with Barbaja in Naples and his temporary retirement from the opera scene is dictated by the desire to direct the investigation on an almost unpublished corpus of operatic compositions with respect to which a systematic and in-depth study is still lacking.
