Marica MAGNANO SAN LIO
Marica Magnano San Lio earned her PhD in Interpretation Sciences from the University of Catania, jointly supervised by the University of Halle-Wittenberg, graduating with a double degree with honors in June 2021. Her research aimed to reconstruct the roots of Karl Jaspers's Allgemeine Psychopathologie (1913), emphasizing its original and innovative nature and contextualizing it within the scientific, philosophical, and historical-psychiatric debates of the time. This research also allowed her to outline the evolution of psychiatric science within the broader framework of the history of twentieth-century science, with particular reference to the history of German psychiatry, especially the contributions of Wilhelm Griesinger and Emil Kraepelin.
Marica Magnano San Lio won the "Karl Jaspers Giovani" prize (2021) with the essay L’“uomo intero” tra filosofia e scienze: la declinazione filosofica della “Allgemeine Psychopathologie”, and a six-month DAAD (Deutscher Akademischer Austauschdienst) research grant at the “Karl Jaspers-Haus” (Karl Jaspers Gesellschaft) in Oldenburg (September 2021-February 22), for research, seminars and the translation into Italian of some of Karl Jaspers' psychopathological writings. The research focused above all on the analysis of specific issues concerning the dialogue between the history of philosophy, the history of science and the history of medicine, such as the concepts of intelligence, dementia and schizophrenia and the related tools for their evaluation and measurement. The results of this period of research flowed into the first complete translations of Karl Jaspers' writings Die Methoden der Intelligenzprüfung und der Begriff der Demenz. Critical Referat (1910) and Kausale and “Verständliche” Zusammenhänge zwischen Schicksal und Psychose bei der Dementia Praecox (Schizophrenie) (1913), later published in the Jaspers Mimesis series in 2023 and 2025, respectively.
Marica Magnano San Lio was a fellow at the Italian Institute for Historical Studies in Naples (2022-24). During this period, her research developed in the fields of the history of philosophy and the history of psychiatry, focusing, also through the analysis of unpublished sources, on the early relationship between Karl Jaspers and Wilhelm Dilthey and on the interaction between natural science and human science.
In November 2025, she obtained the National Scientific Qualification for the role of Associate Professor in the competitive sector 11/C5 – History of Philosophy.
She is currently a contract professor at the Department of Humanities, after teaching Science Communication Models in the undergraduate degree program in Communication Sciences and Languages.
