Expected Learning Outcomes

Learning objectives of the course are the knowledge and understanding of the main problems linked to the study of the civilization of Greek Sicily, understood as an expression of the diachronic development of the phenomenon of Greek colonization in the West.

The course also aims to consolidate the ability to apply the knowledge acquired in relation to both the broader historical dynamics of the ancient Mediterranean and the local context, with particular attention to the processes of cultural interaction with the anhellenic populations of the island.

Through the diachronic analysis of historiographical sources relating, in particular, to the Greek colonization of Sicily, with an integrated approach between history and archaeology, the aim is therefore to encourage the acquisition of substantial autonomy of judgment regarding complex information, providing the communication skills necessary to operate in the field of cultural promotion and dissemination relating to the territory and the chronological period covered by the course.

Detailed Course Content

  1. Historiography of the West and on the Greek West: from the first forms of historical writing to the Hellenistic and Roman periods.
  2. History and archaeology of the Greek cities in Sicily: Thucydides and the foundation of the Sicilian colonies.
  3. The Hyblaean territory.
As part of the course, Professor Giovanni Di Stefano will present a module dedicated to the “Material Culture of the Greeks of Sicily”, structured around the following thematic areas: 1. From Homer’s utopia of the island of the Phaeacians to the earliest colonial settlements; 2. Funerary culture: organization of the spaces of the cities of the dead, rituals, typologies, grave goods, anthropology; 3. Urban culture: urban forms, public spaces, and the culture of domestic habitat.
