·  Provide the tools to understand the socio-political context of contemporary China, including social mentality and public discourse, as well as the role of modern literature in the process of nation-building.

·  Develop effective methods of independent learning and critical engagement with literary texts.

·  Introduce the major writers of modern and contemporary Chinese literature and situate them within their historical, social, and cultural contexts.

·  Foster the ability to maintain independent, critical, and contextually grounded perspectives on intercultural issues.

·  Develop, to a certain extent, the ability to appreciate the aesthetics and expressive features of contemporary Chinese language.

The course provides an introduction to modern and contemporary Chinese literature through the study of representative authors and works, examined within their historical, social, and cultural contexts.

1) Modern Chinese Literature

A. 1917–1927: The New Culture Movement and the emergence of modern literature
This section examines the cultural and linguistic transformations that accompanied the rise of modern literature in China.

B. 1928–1937: Development and diversification of modern fiction and drama
Analysis of major literary trends and representations of urban and rural society in Republican China.

2) Contemporary Chinese Literature

A. 1949–1989: Literature, politics, and social transformation in socialist China
Discussion of major literary trends in this period, with particular attention to post–Cultural Revolution literature and the emergence of new narrative forms during the Reform era.
