CONTEMPORARY HISTORY

Academic Year 2024/2025 - Teacher: MARGHERITA BONOMO

Expected Learning Outcomes

1) Knowledge and understanding

Students must demonstrate that they have understood the reflections and acquisitions of neofeminism and consequently that they have acquired awareness that women's identities, like those of men, are complex social, cultural and political constructions and that such constructions are different depending on the historical and geographical contexts. They must understand the reasons that make it more pertinent to talk about feminisms rather than feminism.

2) Ability to apply knowledge and understanding

Students must demonstrate the ability to relate in a critical and conscious way to the historiography and documentary sources specific to the discipline.

3) Autonomy of judgment

Students must demonstrate the ability to develop original interpretations on the crucial points of the reference period, on the connections and contaminations between the Italian and international contexts,

4) Communication skills

Through the drafting of written papers (short essays, theses, critical readings) and the oral discussion, students must demonstrate the acquisition of specific communication skills: mastery of the disciplinary vocabulary, to argue original ideas and interpretations on the crucial points of the feminist movement, to apply their theoretical knowledge to the cultural debate on current events.

5) Learning ability:

The carrying out of the two in itinere tests and the drafting of the written papers will allow students to equally distribute the teaching load and to develop autonomous learning skills

Detailed Course Content

The course aims to introduce students to the reasons and path of neofeminism within the history of our country by retracing the birth of the different groups, the different positions on divorce and abortion, the experience of trade union feminism and the turning point of the eighties and nineties when, after the dark season of the Years of Lead, the movement rethinks itself and changes course. In this sense, particular attention will be paid to disarmament feminism and the commitment against the installation of Euromissiles, to transnational networks and to the birth and development of ecofeminism.

The course analyzes the most important events of the Contemporary History, and in particular the 20th century. The course will start with some preliminary classes concerning the periodization of the 20th century and the most important historiographical interpretations. The period between 1914 and 1945 will be examined in the second part of the course: the First World War, the Russian Revolution, the Great Depression, the birth of the European totalitarianism, the second World War and its consequences; the last the Cold War; the Palestinian issue; the fall of Communism; the rise of the UE.
