ITALIAN LITERATURE

Expected Learning Outcomes

Knowledge and understanding: Knowledge of the fundamental elements of Italian literature; acquisition of philological research methodologies and literary criticism methodologies, with a special focus on the ability to analyse literary texts critically.

Applying knowledge and understanding: Ability to consider literary texts critically; ability to connect elements of one’s own culture with those of other cultures; ability to orient oneself within the printed and online bibliography; ability to link competences in an interdisciplinary fashion.

Making judgements: Critical ability to combine literary competences acquired in an interdisciplinary fashion and to interpret different sociolinguistic and cultural domains from both a synchronic and a diachronic perspective.

Communication skills: Ability to present the results of one’s study in complex ways; ability to discuss literary contents effectively and critically.

Learning skills: Development of autonomous learning skills in studying the literary materials of the course with the aim of interacting with diverse interlocutors and in different working environments.

Detailed Course Content

Module A: Classics of Italian literature, from the origins to Verismo (7 cfu).

Module B: The poetry and prose of Giacomo Leopardi (2 cfu).

Textbook Information

Module A: during the lessons, some classic texts of Italian literature will be interpreted and commented. Students will have to study the main literary genres and movements and the main authors of Italian literary history from the origins to Verismo. They will use two anthology-manuals available in the library:

a) from G. Baldassari, G. Barucci, Antologia della letteratura italiana. Dalla Scuola poetica siciliana ad Alessandro Manzoni (Raffaello Cortina Editore) they will have to study the following pages: 3-16 (Scuola poetica siciliana, poesia nell’Italia centrale del Duecento, Dolce stil novo), 20-21 (Cavalcanti), 23-33 (Dante), 38-47 (Commedia, Inf., X), 55-65, 68-69, 74-75 (Petrarca), 79-98 (Boccaccio), 101-103 (Umanesimo), 106-111 (Alberti), 113-119 (Firenze laurenziana, Pulci), 129-132, 138 (Boiardo), 141-142 (Bembo e la questione della lingua), 165-167, 174-186 (Machiavelli), 187-199 (Ariosto), 213-223 (Tasso), 225-226, 232-233 (Marino), 235-240 (Galilei), 243-245 (Goldoni), 253-261 (Illuminismo e Parini), 263-265, 272-277 (Alfieri), 281-296 (Foscolo), 315-333 (Manzoni).

b) from C. Segre, C. Martignoni, Testi nella storia. 3 L’Ottocento (Bruno Mondadori Editore) will have to study the following pages: 532-537 (Manzoni), 800-805 (Mazzini), 1084-1089 (De Sanctis), 1197-1200 (Scapigliatura), 1202-1206 (E. Praga), 1253-1260 (Verismo, Positivismo, Naturalismo), 1261-1266, 1273-1286, 1290-1307 (Verga), 1370-1378 (De Roberto), 1449-1462 (Serao), 1463-1474 (Deledda).

c) Students will also have to study:

a. Canto V of Dante's Inferno (using any annotated edition of the Commedia available in the library).

b. Two short stories from Boccaccio's Decameron, a sonnet by G. Marino and two excerpts from Saul and Mirra by V. Alfieri, which will be available on the Studium platform.

c. La bottega del caffè by Carlo Goldoni, in Garzanti or Rizzoli editions (complete study of the text).

Module B :

a) Students will study eight Canti (Ultimo canto di Saffo, L’infinito, Alla luna, La sera del dì di festa, Canto notturno di un pastore errante dell’Asia, A sé stesso, Il tramonto della luna, La ginestra) and five Operette morali (Dialogo della Moda e della Morte, Dialogo di un Folletto e di uno Gnomo, La scommessa di Prometeo, Dialogo della Natura e di un Islandese, Dialogo di un venditore di almanacchi e di un passeggere).. They may use the complete editions of the Canti and Operette morali available in the library, or Pier Vincenzo Mengaldo, Antologia leopardiana: la poesia, Carocci and Pier Vincenzo Mengaldo, Antologia leopardiana: la prosa, Carocci (these two books are also available in the library).

b) Critical texts: Leopardi, edited by Franco D’Intino and Massimo Natale, Carocci, pp. 21-59, 63-68 and 78-97 (the book is available in the library).
