Spanish Language for special purposes and translation

Academic Year 2025/2026 - Teacher: SONIA LIBORIA ALESSANDRA

Expected Learning Outcomes

Knowledge and Understanding Skills: The course aims to achieve a solid and in-depth acquisition of linguistic, communicative, and metalinguistic knowledge and skills, corresponding to levels B2-C1 of the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages. According to this criterion, students will need to demonstrate their ability to comprehend and translate complex texts on concrete, abstract, and specialized topics, capturing the implicit cultural aspects. They will also approach the study of sectorial languages.

Application of Knowledge and Understanding Skills: Students will be able to appropriately translate, substantiating their translational choices based on the methodological approaches used and applied in the source text and their rendering in the target text.

Autonomy of Judgment: Students will be capable of navigating within the context of sectoral micro-languages. They will be able to consult dictionaries and online materials with a critical mindset, recognize translation issues and errors, and assess the quality of the translated text.

Communicative Skills: The fundamental goal will be to convey communication in a specific communicative context. To achieve this, students will be provided with the specific terminology of certain specialized fields necessary for expressing themselves and interacting effectively, using polished language and a structured, articulate, and appropriate form.

Learning Skills: Students will develop a set of cognitive strategies useful for adopting an effective study and learning method, as well as practical skills in specialized translation applicable in the workplace and professional context.

Detailed Course Content

The course aims to provide an overview of specialized communication in the Spanish language. The first part will focus on theoretical and methodological aspects of translation, addressing specific issues related to Spanish-Italian translation through the territories of contrastive linguistics and translation between closely related languages. Subsequently, there will be a reflection on sector-specific languages. After a theoretical introduction to the peculiarities of specialized communication, the course will concentrate on the analysis of communicative codes in opinion journalism (the columna), in sport, the tourism sector, and advertising. The analysis will consider both lexical and textual/pragmatic aspects. Finally, the course will approach, from both a theoretical and practical standpoint, the main characteristics of linguistic mediation between Spanish and Italian.
