ARABIC LANGUAGE AND TRANSLATION 1

§  Students will be able to read and understand simple written and oral texts in standard Arabic on daily topics and to produce simple messages to ask and give personal information;

§  Students will be introduced to the study of fundamental morphologic, syntactic and lexical aspects of standard Arabic and will be able to compare different grammar systems;

Basic elements of phonology, morphology and syntax of Standard Arabic:

• introduction to Modern Standard Arabic;
• alphabet: spelling, pronunciation and graphics;
• root and form;
• article and tanwin;
• name and declension;
• gender and number;
• using the dual;
• personal pronouns;
• nominal sentence;
• al-idafa;
• adjectives and their concordance;
• interrogative sentence;
• demonstrative pronouns/adjectives;
• triliteral roots and past of regular verbs;
• verbal sentence;
• present of regular verbs;
• subjunctive and conditional;
• imperative;
• future;
• numerals;
• particles, prepositions and adverbs;
• periphrases to translate the verb “to have”;
• main derivative forms of regular triliteral verb;
• masdar and participles;
