MEDIEVAL HISTORY

1) Knowledge and understanding

Demonstrate knowledge and understanding in the field of historical research, in particular of medieval history.

2) Ability to apply knowledge and understanding

Be able to apply their knowledge and understanding in a way that demonstrates a professional approach to the study of Medieval History, and possess adequate skills both to devise and support arguments and to solve problems in their field of study.

3) Autonomy of judgement

To gather and interpret data useful for making autonomous judgements (in particular in the study of historical sources), including reflection on related social, scientific or ethical issues.

4) Communication skills

Communicating information, ideas, problems and solutions to specialist and non-specialist audiences.

5) Learning skills

To develop the skills necessary to undertake further studies (particularly historical studies) with a high degree of autonomy.

General Section. The course will trace a general outline of medieval history (5th-15th centuries). Topics include: the transformation of the late antique world; Empire and Church; the medieval Mediterranean; lordship; the city in medieval Europe; society and politics in the medieval world.

Monographic Section: The Footprint of History-The Landscape in the Middle Ages: The course will explore the question of the relationship between society and nature in the Middle Ages, highlighting in particular the transformations of the Italian landscape during the 5^th-15^th centuries. The course will show how these transformations are closely connected to the variety of practices of social living. The landscape bears the footprint of human beings, of their economic activities, and of their cultural preferences. The course will also reflect on different historiographical approaches to environmental history, referring in particular to one of Italy’s greatest landscape historians, Emilio Sereni.
