Expected Learning Outcomes
1) Knowledge and understanding
Demonstrate knowledge and understanding in the field
of historical research, in particular of medieval history.
2) Ability to apply knowledge and understanding
Be able to apply their knowledge and understanding in
a way that demonstrates a professional approach to the study of Medieval
History, and possess adequate skills both to devise and support arguments and
to solve problems in their field of study.
3) Autonomy of judgement
To gather and interpret data useful for making
autonomous judgements (in particular in the study of historical sources),
including reflection on related social, scientific or ethical issues.
4) Communication skills
Communicating information, ideas, problems and
solutions to specialist and non-specialist audiences.
5) Learning skills
Developing
skills in order to carry on inquiries (particularly in the field of history)
with a high degree of authonomy.

Detailed Course Content
General section. The course will provide a general
overview of medieval history (5th-15th centuries). Topics covered will include:
the transformation of the late antique world; the Empire and the Church; the
medieval Mediterranean; feudal rule; cities in medieval Europe; society and
politics in the medieval world.
Special
section: Towards a history of the environment
in the Middle Ages. One of the most dynamic areas in contemporary
medieval studies is environmental history. A deeply interdisciplinary field,
environmental history has numerous intersections between the work of
historians, philologists and literary scholars in general. This part of the
course will highlight some of the most innovative aspects of contemporary
research on environmental history in the Middle Ages.
