Caterina Papatheu, former contract professor at the University of Calabria, is an assistant professor in Modern Greek Language and Civilization at the Department of Humanities, University of Catania (Italy).

Her Chair has been formally accredited by the Hellenic Ministry of Education, Lifelong Learning and Religious Affairs as Examination Centre for the International Certificate of Attainment in Modern Greek; and has had two international rewards by the Onassis Foundation (2013) and Turk -Yunan Dostluk Dernegi “DEFNE” (2009).

She is:

  • a former member of the scientific committee of the PhD in History-Arts-Linguistics at the Department of Humanities, University of Catania (Italy);
  • a former member of ITALSTRA (Italian Language School for Foreigners), at the Department of Humanities, University of Catania (Italy);
  • a member both of the National and the European Association for the Modern Greek Studies;
  • a member of AISB (Italian Association of Byzantine Studies in Late Antique and Byzantine History and Byzantine Literature);
  • the Research Centre of Modern History (KENI) Panteion University of Athens (Greece);
  • a representative of the Italian Ministry of Education (MIUR) as a national commissioner of graduation sessions;
  • the director of a book series for “Bonanno Publishing House” (Rome - Acireale);
  • the coordinator of the Examination Centre for the International Certificate of Attainment in Modern Greek, Hellenic Ministry of Education, Lifelong Learning and Religious Affairs;
  • the coordinator for Eastern Sicily of the National Foundation of Research of the Centre of Modern Greek Language, Hellenic Ministry of Education, Lifelong Learning and Religious Affairs;
  • the coordinator of an University Specialization Course in “Communication of territory” at the Department of Humanities, University of Catania (Italy);

She has taught iconology and iconography at the SISSIS (Interuniversity School of Specialization for Secondary School Teachers), in various II-level University Master Degrees about national identities and urban development, as a visiting professor at Panteion University of Athens (Greece), and has given several seminars in Greece, Germany, Italy and France, and for the Foundation INDA (National Institute of Ancient Drama). She has translated into Italian and edited Greek writers for the publishing houses Einaudi, Marzorati, ecc., and has collaborated with various reviews in Italy and Greece, as well as with encyclopaedias (UTET, Bompiani, Mondadori).  

She has  collaborated with Greek and Turkish study centres, has had long research stays at the Maison des Sciences dell’Homme de Paris, under the direction of Maurice Aymard, and she has written articles and essays (at the moment she has 98 pubblications.).

Main research areas are: Cultural and political relations between Greece and the Ottoman Empire between the 16th century. and early 20th century; Literary translation; Urban development and functional adaptation of urban clusters in Greece; Question of language, lexicography and dialecticisms; National identity and diaspora; Beginnings of the Greek press and the book market in Europe, the Balkans and the Ottoman Empire from the 16th to the 19th century; Literary and non-fiction production from the 16th to the 19th century; Popular traditions and e Greek War of Independence’s myths, between text and iconography.
